Multicultural Critical Theory

One of the main criteria when evaluating somebody’s mental capacity raises the question about the person’s thinking.  At the same time, decision or thought is the final stage of it. Possibly, the main issue is how somebody thinks. If the final decision or conclusion is the ending point of the thinking process, the possibility to find this point depends heavily on the ability to widely look at the field of potential opportunities to see the best ending point and correct way to it. The article Multicultural Critical Theory by Lane Wallace is devoted to the necessity of changes in business schools to teach students critical thinking that can improve the process of making decisions in the future.

First, it should be defined what is wrong with the usual way of business students’ thinking. While studying, business students usually have traditional for business schools disciplines such as marketing or finance. This separate vision restricts the possibilities of seeing the problem as a whole and finding out the best decision. Making a strategy, which is not free from predispositions and predetermined conclusions, is the problem of the traditional way of thinking. Taking into account the fact that today business needs people that make flexible decisions, whose correct understanding of the situation will diminish the risks’ level, students should be able to think fast and develop their skills in critical thinking. They should be holistic thinkers and do not separate the problem into different disciplines, but see it as a whole complex phenomenon. It allows creating various assumptions and seeing a great number of possible solutions.

Consequently, the question to be answered is how we can foster the critical thinking. Considering the teaching strategies for this purpose, it can be noticed that students should deeply understand the situation and be flexible in their decisions.  Hence, multidisciplinary approach should be used for the complete view of the situation. Moreover, students should understand the cultural as well as historical context and see their perspectives. Social responsibilities and leadership are also significant for changing the way of thinking. One of the most important elements is the development of critical thinking skills. Different new classes and subjects should realize such strategies. Some classes should provide the knowledge for the analyses of the situation, where one should know the background of every situation and how to analyze it. Other classes have to teach students how to think flexibly, correctly evaluate the situation, which presumes critical consideration of different points of view, and finding out different solutions for the same problem. The main purposes for the usage of new approaches in classes are to teach students to be more creative when not seeing the issue separately, but finding a huge number of links with the other problems and possibilities. If the traditional approach teaches what to do in the standard situation and finding a fresh idea is a difficulty, new approaches try to create skills for searching the new ideas.

While achieving the goal of critical thinking development, students and instructors can face some hurdles they have to overcome. First, students can find the links between different aspects of the problem with difficulties (which is necessary for a wider view).  Second, students should be completely objective and avoid any biases as making assumptions can be problematic.  Third, there is a necessity to be critical enough and attempts to find different possible decisions can cause the troubles for students as well. The difficulties that instructors might encounter consist of the necessity of the student’s stimulation to question even the authority.

Summarizing all stated above and taking into account new challenges in the contemporary business, changes in the curriculum for business schools are difficult, however, they are a necessary measure.
