In Our Time (1982) is a movie divided into four omnibus parts. These parts are directed by different people and deliver four different stories that depict such themes as loneliness, childhood, and problems of the adult age. This particular movie became the first one to present the arrival of the New Taiwan Cinema.
Each short film describes one period from the 1950s to the 1980s and highlights the problems of the main characters from the childhood to the adult age. The first story called “Little Dragonhead” depicts a little boy who is neglected by his parents. The boy’s only friend is a dinosaur toy. The situation becomes better when he meets the neighbor’s daughter and makes friends with her. However, the parents of the girl are forced to go to another city, and the main character does not know that his friendship will end soon. The current episode clearly depicts the meaning of loneliness.
The second story “Expectations” describes the life of a teenage girl and her feelings to a handsome boy who lives in the apartment next door. Her obsession forces her to abandon her school friends and imagine the relationship with the boy. However, her dreams collapse when she learns that her older sister has a romantic bond with him. This part depicts the dramatic consequences of the relationships. The third story “Leapfrog” tells about a student who wants to be a poet, although his father does not accept his choice. This film has a comic character and inner monologs of ‘Fatty.’ The story is confusing, yet it still presents the high-quality filmmaking. The fourth story is called “Say Your Name” A young couple moves into a new apartment and experiences many comic situations. The movie shows that the adult age also has its problems that are difficult to avoid.
In Our Time is a chronological movie that shows the problems of each age period of the human life. All four parts, which were filmed by different directors, are connected by one idea: every character shows the essential features of their age.
