Principles of Early Childhood Education

1. Quality ECE Programs

To my mind, Early Childhood Education is enormously important in everybody’s life. It occupies a leading role in the child’s development as well as the social one. Quality early education can prepare a child for prosperity at school and life, in general. Quality programs should assure the child’s development and success. First of all, high quality programs should be accessible to all types of families. Otherwise, they will be not effective.

In my opinion, there are some points which should be included in a quality program. They are the following ones: a comfortable schedule, teachers’ professionalism, a study environment, linguistic and intellectual assimilation, parent support and participating, as well as facilities for entertainment and leisure time.

The right plan successfully contributes to the growth of the child’s liberty. To my mind, the child should have an opportunity to be provided with subjects that are similar with his or her interests. Parents should have an opportunity to choose some subjects which they want their child to learn. Of course, it is vital for an offspring to learn basic subjects. They affect the future life and education. Apart a basic program, children should have the opportunity to choose some extra lessons, i.e. music, reading or a dancing class. It is absolutely the right way to bring joy into the routine work. Moreover, staff’s professionalism is very important. The high quality program should employ well experienced and educated teachers that have been trained in the early childhood environment.

Furthermore, they should be called professionals. Teachers should feel boundaries between being a child’s friend and a strict teacher. The relations between teachers and children are enormously important in the early childhood education. The groups of children have to be of a small size. It is impossible when a small classroom contains 36 pupils instead of 18. These are the uncomfortable conditions of a study process which can bring only negative results. An early education teacher is unable to look after all children and pay attention to everybody in such a case. Teaching classes have to be conditioned with all the necessary equipment for the study. Representing respect for language and culture expands positive relations with family and their children by using different practices.

Parents’ support is obviously a very important part of education. It gives teachers the opportunity to understand conditions in which children are living. Parents can help teachers to improve the study process in case a child is unwilling to understand or unable to do something. Furthermore, the classes have to be equipped with different facilities for entertainment. It helps children to feel relaxed during the whole working day. According to Bullard, classrooms have to be stocked with the right equipment to make children move around. Moreover, adults (teachers) should act together expressively with children and help them out to improve the comprehension through having fun (245). A play is one of the best practices to make children understand and learn new things. It makes the memorization of all subjects better, if teachers teach children with the help of a game or other colorful and interesting images or videos.

2. How Children Learn

I believe that most children learn all basics of life after learning to talk and before beginning the official schooling. In kindergarten, children begin to understand all the life events in different ways. They percept, act and even talk the other way round. Here, children begin to recognize various feelings as they are. This type of perception is given to children by nature. Children learn during the play and because of the environment around. Thanks to it, they are able to understand the name of a thing, size, smell, taste and even some feelings towards it. Children’s minds interpret outer experiences with individual senses. They turn out to be the owners of their personal environment.

A lot of studies have showed relations among the play and equally social and logical abilities. They are, for example, recollection, communication abilities, intellectual modification, and participating in a public life. In addition, studies demonstrate that the play is a process where the offspring first experiences the skills to delay a fulfillment, to take into consideration someone’s opinion, to think theoretically, and to willingly follow instructions of a teacher and parents. The majority of play theorists support adults playing a great part in children's engaging in recreation. According to Hirsh-Pasek, Golinkoff and Eyer, there are five elements of children’s play: the play has to be enjoyable and pleasurable; it should not have any extrinsic aims as well as no arranged knowledge that has to appear. Besides, the play is unprompted and deliberate; it engrosses the energetic appointment from the side of an entertainer; and the play has an imaginary element (72).

  1. My beliefs about learning through a play theory are similar to different theorists and researchers. Among the most famous philosophers and psychologists, there is Hebert Spencer. He said that people used to spend energy only on basic needs few centuries ago. Nevertheless, nowadays, people spend less energy on basic needs. They reimburse the extra energy in some other way as the play. Sigmund Freud was a famous psychoanalyst who saw a play as an outlet of the one to unattractive approaches and activities in a further satisfactory way. Other researchers as Karl Groos, Maria Montessori, Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky and David Elkind think that anthropological intelligence develops through an integration of a play and work. Maria Montessori thinks that children better learn if they play learning and visualizing some worthwhile things. She considers the play as a child’s job. Instead of different understanding, all of them think that children just need to have fun which will bring them success in education and physical development.
  2. The best choice to apply practice is to make children do something. They learn better when they are involved in an activity. Therefore, they can assemble the information derived from their personal practice and accept the active information. When children play, they learn different things by various acts without paying attention to a study process. This process can bring a lot of success. Benjamin Franklin said, “Show me and I forget; teach me and I remember; involve me and I remember” (“Brainy Quote,” n.d.).
  3. It is developmentally suitable to educate the offspring of a tough feeling of worldwide brotherhood. The knowledge should be an introductive emphasis connecting all developmental fields as physical growth, verbal and collective development. Successful education increases the child’s confidence and encourages more examination. Therefore, a youngster starts to be taught and develops his or her atmosphere increasing skills.

3. Creating Learning Environments

The learning environment is a special set where children’s education takes place. There are some aspects which have to be taken into consideration as physical, social/emotional, entertainment environments and racial factors.

  1. A teaching classroom has to be equipped with all necessary materials and facilities for a successful perception and study. First of all, classrooms have to be arranged with different pictures, plants, posters and even comfortable pillows for relaxing or reading. Moreover, the classroom has to be divided into several parts as a music corner, a reading corner, a play corner or an art corner. Moreover, everything has to be easily accessible. I do not think that desks should be arranged in rows. Desks can be arranged around the circle. Such a physical environment will probably reflect on the success and reception. It is much better to teach a child by playing. I believe that such a study will bring good results. Therefore, I would design a classroom with a lot of toys and logical games. Moreover, it is very useful and interesting to establish a biological or zoo corner in the classroom. It will teach a child to care about others. Possibly, the child will not even pay attention to it because of playing. I believe that these classrooms will bring just positive results.
  2. A social environment plays a great role in the children’s learning process. First of all, the atmosphere within staff has to be friendly as it influences on children. Children percept all the things which surround them. Moreover, the teacher has to establish some rules in the classroom. It gives children an opportunity to understand the responsibility for something. Moreover, they will learn to respect other kids who are studying in the same classroom. The offspring will understand that they may interrupt the study process and distract the attention of others away. Children do not have to feel a lot of freedom to do everything they want. Furthermore, relations between the teacher and children have to be friendly as well as professional. Children do not have to be afraid of asking questions or doing something incorrectly. Obviously, there has to be a strict line between children and the teacher.
  3. Playing can be concerned as a relaxing method either as a teaching one. Therefore, in the classroom, there has to be a special playing corner arranged where children can feel free from their study process. Of course, the classroom has to contain various toys and logic games. Due to the play, children develop their feelings, logic, imagine and attention. Moreover, it develops their communicative skills as they do not play games alone, but with other children who are willing to participate in this game.
  4. Children should be taught to respect all nations and people independently from their race and nationality. Talking about racism and respect should not be a special program or communication but it has to be an everyday business. Children can read the special literature, watch movies or experience some situations with multiracial children or adults. They have to learn to respect other people and other cultures. This will help them to observe and change their considerations and provide a self-reflective job. Teachers have to provide special studies about the equality of all people. Children should understand that there are no black or white Americans. All humans are the same ones; and everybody has the same rights to live a good life. Besides, the teacher has to provide children with situations by which they will be able to learn to respect every nation.
  5. Children with special needs have to be placed in inclusive classrooms where they can feel the emotional and social reimbursement. They need to have a special communication with their group mates. It will help to expand better communication skills. Children have to communicate with ordinary kids who will help them to develop either physically or intellectually. A lot of researchers said that children with special needs that had been communicating and studying with ordinary children showed better results in the development in comparison with children being in the environment with the same offspring.

4. Communication & the Code of Ethics

  1. Children should respect each other despite the social status, race and disabilities. They have to be provided with special ethic lessons where they learn how to behave correctly in the society. Moreover, children have to be patient according to others. Communication is a vital tool. It helps children to become more freewheeling. It can help children who are living in a one-parent family and lacking the parents’ attention. Moreover, it improves communicational skills of every child and gives extra knowledge.
  2. Early childhood education requests for a support of parents to take a full advantage of the program. Parents should divide choices concerning the environment of their children’s learning process as well as care experience. Parents and teachers have to communicate in order to avoid different problems and improve a study process in some cases. Teachers need to share goals about children’s education with their parents with the purpose to build a home culture. Moreover, to achieve better results, teachers have to tell parents about the child’s achievements to improve them at home. Parents are a significant source. Their participation at home has rewards which are as significant as the rewards of their participation in kindergarten. Consequently, they should have been encouraged for a home-focused participation and positive to communicate, control and to expressive and educational support at home. With the intention of achieving this, the American early childhood educational system has to make and expand a lot of channels of contact among the early education staff and parents. When parents are involved in the education of young children, it improves the relations between them and kindergarten staff. Moreover, a lot of researches have showed that it positively effects on a child’s intellectual success and a healthy physical development.
  3. The communication between staff has to be ethical and professional. Teachers have to share their experience with younger colleagues and help them in troubles. This will show children a good example of behavior. Moreover, it will teach them to help and communicate properly.
  4. Children should be taught to respect elders and adults as well as peers. Behavior in the society shows a child’s level of development, intelligence and even psychical health.

5. Guidance

Thanks to a good guidance, children are able to be taught how to make right choices and a value of respect.

  • I believe that it is immoral to punish a child physically. The best way to solve the problem is just to have a conversation after misbehavior. As it is already known, children are most open to learn exactly after making an inaccuracy. Of course, conversation cannot always help. Therefore, there are other ways as alternatives to a punishment as time out or some limits. Moreover, children have to attend some lessons about emotions. They should understand that each type of feeling is usual, ordinary and healthy. Children can experience various feelings during a day. They can be bad or good. Thus, children have to understand how to cope with bad emotions. Furthermore, teachers can give lessons on different topics connected to bad behavior as, “Hands are given us to do something useful, not to harm” or “A bad word can hurt more than a sword”.
  • It is important to observe a child when the teacher has some troubles with him or her. The early education staff has to observe the child and notice any causative reasons leading up to an unpleasant incident. Sometimes it happens because of the child’s illness. After a careful observation, the teacher is able to understand the reasons of misbehavior in order avoid such situations in future or make some important changes. There are a lot of ways how to observe a child. For instance, the teacher is able to observe a child during the game. It will show the child’s interests, a developmental level, goals, skills and personality. Thanks to it, the teacher is able to know the reasons of misbehavior and think over the solution. Moreover, the teacher has to communicate with parents. It can be possible that the child takes over from someone of a family. As it is known, children always try to do everything their parents or relatives do in case they like them or spend a lot of time together. Furthermore, family conflicts can lead to the child’s misbehavior and worsen psychical health.

6. Parent/Guardian Partnerships

In case parents and children work together from the kindergarten, they can achieve great results. The family conditions have a huge impact on a child’s emotional, scholar and public development. If parents are engaged in the child’s study, it will broad the kid’s mind, increase the development and progress. Parents can repeat with children the material and help to do home assignments. Moreover, parents have to remember that kindergartens nowadays are not only playing institutions as they have been before.

Today, children learn various disciplines here. Parents have to know all the information about the child: if the child copes fine with others; if the kid can concentrate on something for as a minimum 15 minutes; if he or she is willing to complete tasks individually without any help and whether a child is able to be apart from home without suffering. First-class early education programs persuade the parents’ participation at home and the education life of the child. Volunteering to understand writing throughout a story time, to distribute cultural customs, or to be a lunch visitor is every way for relatives to experience that they are an important element of their kid’s preschool days. Along with different researches, parents’ and relatives’ participation raises children’s accomplishments and achievements. Preschool teachers should make relatives experience warm helping in the kindergarten. It will make parents possibly to be implicated in their child’s future life.

To help relatives, preschool staff has to organize a visit to kindergarten and take them on the pre-school playgroup tour. The teacher-parents meetings and special letters with news are able to assist parents in learning how to work with their children, learn the additional information about volunteer prospects in the kindergarten, in addition to how to get ready their offspring in home conditions for the kindergarten. They may need some useful pieces of advice on how to assist their child and themselves manage with disquiets concerned to a changeover from nursery to kindergarten.

Communities play a great role in the early childhood education. It gives children an opportunity to achieve better results. Instead of this, parents have to choose everything concerning their child by themselves and listen only to the right pieces of advice according to their views. While taking part in volunteering programs parents communicate with other parents. So they have the opportunity to enrich their concerns about early education of their children and get some useful information according to young children’s development and upbringing.

7. Professionalism & Advocacy

  1. ECE professional is a person who works in the field of early childhood education. This person is able to create a successful educative program which can bring great results. This person tries to create a program which can be affordable to different income families. Such a person wants to improve the educational situation and fill the gaps with important innovations. To my mind, such a program will assure a good educative, social and communicative development of a child.
  2. Professional has to combine care and education. The teacher has a responsibility to teach, in the whole, the child in all aspects, help achieve the kid’s personal potential. The teacher has no responsibility to separate the child from the family’s environment, society and the culture. Moreover, any teacher has to support relations between a child and a family. There is a great responsibility put on an ECE professional.
  3. ECE teacher influences on different areas of the child’s life. For instance, these areas are social, home, and physical. The child develops all his first ideas about the outdoor world in the kindergarten. Preschool education develops the child’s psychical health, physical level and intellectual side. That is why it is important to give a high-quality early education for the kid.

To my mind, quality early childhood education programs should include: a comfortable schedule, teachers’ professionalism, a study environment, linguistic and intellectual assimilation, parents’ support and participating, as well as facilities for entertainment and leisure time. My beliefs about children learning are similar to the theory of mind points. They are the best way to apply this practice in order to make children do something. When talking about quality ECE program, the professional should take into consideration physical, social, emotional, entertainment environments and various racial factors. Ethics should be present in each social group: between the offspring, staff, parents and the general public.

Thanks to a good guidance, children are able to be taught how to make right choices and a value of respect. I believe this is immoral to punish children physically as there are a lot of alternatives to such a punishment nowadays. In case parents and children work together from the kindergarten, they can achieve great results. While talking about early childhood education, ECE professionals should combine care and education and have responsibilities to teach, in the whole, the child in all aspects to achieve his or her personal potential.
