8 Simple Rules for College Selection

Rules for College Selection
June 17, 2016

Don’t rely on secondhand experience

Before you select a college, visit your top three options. Whatever you’ve read or hear from other people, nothing compares to walking the place yourself. If the feel of the place is not for you, it will be obvious right away. Take a friend or a relative with you, so you’ll have someone to talk to and share impressions with afterwards.

Reputation isn’t everything

Selecting a college should not depend exclusively on its reputation. If the name of the university is recognizable, there is still no guarantee that the time and money you are investing will be worth it in the end.

Research is the key

Explore all college choices that fit your criteria. You lose nothing by spending a bit longer on the Internet and might discover a gem of a school, you’ve never even heard about before! Disregard popular opinions and look at the facts. If a college is discussed a certain way, it does not mean it is like that in reality.

Separate your new self from your high school past

If you aren’t sick of the people you went to high school with now, imagine how you’ll feel after four more years together. Also, following your girlfriend of boyfriend to university can negatively influence not only your future, but theirs as well.

Don’t get scared away by tuition fees

Nowadays, there are so many options other than student loans, that you’d honestly be surprised. Financial aid, on-campus jobs, scholarships can all rescue you from imminent bankruptcy, so don’t hesitate to apply.

Remember the Deadlines

You don’t want to miss out on the education of your dreams because of a missed deadline. I know, there are many of them, but making a schedule and sticking to it is no more complicated then submitting your assignments in time.

Apply everywhere

When you select a college, there are some schools, you feel pretty confident about. However, don’t limit yourself to safe options. Apply anywhere you want, even if it seems like a reach. Even if you don’t succeed, you’ll at least know you’ve tires.

Ask for advice from people you trust

Before making your final college choice, talk to those you respect and rely on. Making a choice is hard, so you need all the support you can get.
